This border hopping break visits some fascinating locations in the Netherlands and Germany, whilst staying in beautiful Belgium. We start with Maastricht and Valkenburg, which may only be a stone’s throw from each other in the south of the Netherlands, but they are two very different cities. Maastricht is the vibrant and cosmopolitan capital of the region, and Valkenburg is crowned by the only hilltop castle in the country. We then venture into the Eifel Mountain to visit the pretty town of Monschau, where you can while away time exploring the narrow streets lined with half-timbered houses and surrounded by emerald green forests.

Itinerary
Day 1: UK – Belgium
Your holiday begins when you board our private coach in the early morning and travel to Dover for the crossing to Calais. On arrival in Calais we drive off and continue to our hotel in Liège.

Day 2: Maastricht & Valkenburg
After your included breakfast we venture into the Netherlands to visit Maastricht. Nestling on the River Meuse, with a history spanning some 2,000 years, this ancient city is a pretty and interesting place to explore. Highlights include the seven-arched bridge of St Servaasbrug, Helpoort – the oldest city gate in the country, the impressive Basilica of Our Lady, and the 17th century city hall which dominates the market square. There’s also the old quarter on the right bank of the Meuse and the quaint neighbourhood of Jekerkwartier, named after the Jeker River which runs between the old houses and the city walls. In the afternoon we visit the nearby city of Valkenburg. Valkenburg is probably best known for its series of caves, which date back hundreds of years and provide an exciting overview of the various forms of artistic expression and living conditions of countless generations of humans. There’s also the only hilltop castle in the Netherlands overlooking the city, along with many more beautiful buildings which include the watermill, St Nicholas Church, the ancient city walls and gates and Wilhelmina tower where you can enjoy magnificent views. We return to our hotel after a great day exploring.

The town train which departs from market square is a great introduction to the main sights, taking you up to the ruins of the 13th century castle. Along the route there are some interesting museums, along with little shops and cafés which you can visit later. The Red house in the heart of the town is a particular highlight and takes its name from the colour of its bricks, which make it stand out sharply from the surrounding buildings. There’s also the brewery museum where you can learn about the 150 year old art of brewing. After a full day we enjoy a relaxing evening back at our hotel.

Day 4: Return Journey Home
After your included breakfast we check out of our hotel and travel to Calais for our return crossing to Dover, where we continue by coach to arrive back in your local area in the mid to late evening.Please note: The places mentioned in Maastricht, Valkenburg and Monschau are given as suggestions only, no entrances are included.
